Construction and Working Principle The core and windings of an oil-immersed transformer are submerged in a tank filled with mineral oil or synthetic ester fluid. The oil circulates naturally or through forced cooling mechanisms (such as radiators or fans) to maintain optimal operating temperatures. The transformer consists of: - Core: Made of laminated silicon steel to minimize eddy current losses. - Windings: Typically copper or aluminum conductors insulated with paper or other dielectric materials. - Tank: A sealed steel enclosure that houses the core and windings, filled with insulating oil. - Bushings: Insulated terminals that connect the transformer to external circuits. - Conservator: An auxiliary tank that compensates for oil volume changes due to temperature fluctuations. When energized, alternating current in the primary winding induces a magnetic field in the core, which in turn generates voltage in the secondary winding. The oil absorbs heat from the windings and core, ensuring stable performance. Advantages 1. Efficient Cooling: Oil has excellent thermal conductivity, allowing effective heat dissipation even under heavy loads. 2. Enhanced Insulation: The oil prevents electrical breakdown by filling gaps between windings and other components. 3. Long Service Life: Proper maintenance ensures decades of reliable operation. 4. High Voltage Handling: Suitable for applications ranging from distribution (11 kV) to transmission (500 kV and above). 5. Self-Healing Properties: Minor electrical discharges in oil are absorbed without immediate failure. Maintenance and Safety Considerations Regular maintenance includes oil testing (dielectric strength, moisture content, acidity), visual inspections, and checking for leaks. Key safety measures involve: - Buchholz Relay: Detects internal faults (e.g., gas accumulation) and triggers alarms or disconnects the transformer. - Pressure Relief Devices: Prevent tank rupture during excessive internal pressure. - Fire Safety: Oil is flammable, so fire-resistant fluids or containment systems may be used in high-risk areas. Applications Oil-immersed transformers are commonly found in: - Power substations - Industrial plants - Renewable energy systems (wind/solar farms) - Railway electrification Conclusion Oil-immersed transformers remain a cornerstone of electrical infrastructure due to their robustness and cost-effectiveness.
